I’m an idiot. Last week I put SPD pedals on my hybrid. Today, I arrived in Annecy with no cycling shoes.

Unfortunately the snow was very soft up high and almost impossible to ride on.
So I ended up pushing for several kilometres. Nice hike though.
I bumped into a Chamoix – sort of a deer. Note the perfectly heart-shaped bum. Happy Valentine’s day.
Now this is an amazing route!
A couple of kilometres from Thones is a turn up a very steep, quiet road to the little-known Col de Plan Bois (not in my cycling bible).
Beautiful day. Martin and I did a big loop around Lake Annecy via Col de l’Epine, Col du Marais and Col de Bluffy.

That funny white thing with wings is a giant monument to the French Resistance.
Glieres was a major base in WW2 for the Maquis.
Pré means meadow in French – so Col des Prés clumsily translated means “mountain pass of the meadows.”
One of the fun parts of riding in the Alps is reading the cycling graffiti on the roads.
Today’s route still has remnants of 2004 Tour de France Graffiti – including several artistic polka dot tributes to French hero Richard Virenque.
