Mont Revard via Col de Plainpalais

By Will • Mar 14th, 2007 • Category: Climbs, Cycling

Mont Revard towers above Lac Bourget (the biggest lake in France). I had climbed this a couple of year’s back, with Doreen on her birthday, from Aix-les-Bains. Today, I climbed from the other main route starting in Chambery.

It’s a long, not too steep, climb (26 kms, 1270 metres vertical). I skipped the first turn (D206a) to Revard to climb Col de Plainpalais (at 1,173 metres) which is just a bit past the second turn (D913) to Revard.

The little ski stations up higher have been devastated by the warm weather, and I only saw kids tobogganing. The lookout at the top of Mont Revard (1535 metres) sits on a sheer cliff overlooking the Lake with Mont Chat (one of my favorite climbs) on the other side. A giant Salade Savoyarde on the sunny patio of the restaurant, and then an almost hour descent.

I took the D206a detour back. This is a far more interesting road, and shortens the route - in other words its a steep detour, but I would recommend it to anyone looking for a tougher climb.

Grrr, forgot Camera so no Col photo.

Will is Happiest while cycling uphill. More enthusiastic than talented, his 2008 Challenge is to (again) cycle 160,000 metres of vertical ascent.
