Autumn Geneva Trails

By Will • Nov 3rd, 2007 • Category: Cycling, Doreen

There are endless cycling trails around the Geneva area. It’s just a question of knowing them. Today, Doreen and I did a beautiful leisurely 2 hour ride on various paths just west of the city. The perfect weather continues.

Swiss Alps - Berner Oberland

By Will • Sep 9th, 2007 • Category: Climbs, Cycling, Doreen, Favorites

Perhaps the best three days of (challenging) cycling I have ever done. Even a lousy photographer like me couldn’t help but take some great pictures - it’s paradise here.

Tour de France - Galibier

By Will • Jul 17th, 2007 • Category: Climbs, Cycling, Favorites, Tour de France

Col du Galibier via Col du Telegraphe is the biggest climb in France in terms of altitude gain. I can get to the base of Telegraphe from home in an hour forty-five - as it starts right next to an autoroute - sweet.

Tour de France - Bastille Day

By Will • Jul 14th, 2007 • Category: Climbs, Cycling, Favorites, Tour de France

What a great Bastille Day. Doreen and I cycled up the Col de la Colombiere to watch the Tour de France. People and cyclists everywhere and hot!
We rode up with Brian - his first week in Geneva and already cycling mountains. Martin and Barry took the train from Geneva and bravely [...]

Col de Pierre Carrée - Flaine Ski Station

By Will • Apr 17th, 2007 • Category: Climbs, Cycling

In the Alps, you can always find snow - if you go high enough.
We have skiied many times at Flaine - its probably the highest resort near Geneva. It was 25°C (77°F) at the start, but i knew the 21 km route with 1,350 metres of ascent would lead me to cooler weather, [...]

Saleve via Col des Pitons

By Will • Apr 9th, 2007 • Category: Climbs, Cycling

A big ride with Martin on some quiet , scenic roads.
After a slow start and a flat tire, my first day in shorts involved a challenging climb up the Saleve. If you look at the elevation chart below, you can see that we took the more gradual way up although it is quite steep [...]

Col de la Ramaz - Fermé

By Will • Mar 9th, 2007 • Category: Climbs, Cycling, Snow

The plan was a loop starting in Taninges, up to Col de la Ramaz, down the other side (which I climbed last April), and back to Taninges. Good Plan!
The secret of this route is to take the tiny route D307 out of Taninges and not the far busier D902. The routes run parallel [...]

Col de la Croisette - Le Salève

By Will • Mar 6th, 2007 • Category: Climbs, Cycling

Parts of this climb are steep! With a 4 kilometre stretch averaging 12%

I usually do this almost 40 kilometre loop in the other direction, for a more gradual climb up the saleve. But I decided to do the steep way today, although I brought a hybrid bike so i [...]

Les Arcs

By Will • Jan 13th, 2007 • Category: Climbs, Cycling, Snow

Whats pink and blue all over and riding a bike?
We are high in the French Alps at Les Arc ski resort. We’re high enough that the skiing looks great - many lower resorts are closed or nearly closed.
Most big cols in France are snowed in and closed. But ski resorts of course [...]

Chalets d’Ajon

By Will • Oct 27th, 2006 • Category: Climbs, Cycling

A beautiful, quiet road in the pictoresque Vallée Verte (only about 20 miles from us). Quite steep in parts, the route ends at a little plateau with a farm at the foot of the highest point in the area. I got off the bike and hiked the last steep kilometre to a beautiful [...]
