Happiest while cycling uphill.

58.8 km Geneva is surrounded by a lake and mountains and sometimes (like today) gets fogged in — even though it is sunny everywhere else nearby. Today’s ride started from home in freezing cold, pea soup fog. After about 20 kilometers I left the Geneva valley around the huge Vuache mountain and started climbing. Glorious sunshine! But only for another 20 kilometres. As I started heading home, right back into the fog. It was like two totally different days. The ski-ing here in Val D’Isere is fantastic. Every day has been 100% sunny. Europe is in a mini heat wave and the Alps are a little short of snow but luckily Val D’Isere is a very high resort, so everything is open. No lift lines and lots of wide open great runs at high altitude. BUT NO BIKING! No broken bones yet, but a good bang on the head in one crash – I’ve been falling head first to protect my bike legs. I will have to make up some kilometers next week. will-davies.com

One of the real challenges in hitting my 10,000km goal will be that I like to do other sports as well. Case in point – leaving tomorrow morning for a week of ski-ing in Val D’Isere (French Alps). I may try and rent a mountain bike one day if the roads are clear – but I’ll need to make up for lost kilometres on my return. And – since I’m a fairly lousy skier – if I break a leg …….yikes! will-davies.com

53.4 km. Some days I feel like I am on empty. But some days I just feel strong. Today: I attacked every hill, I kept getting out of the saddle, and I kept feeling strength in my legs. What a buzz! I am exhausted now but feel great. It’s worth remembering the recovery day yesterday – it definitely worked it’s magic. Today was my biking equivalent to a “runner’s high.” Total distance 349.1 km Total Ascent: 4,698 metres Total Calories: 12,936 will-davies.com

36.3 km. On a recovery day I try and keep my heart rate down using my Polar 720i Heart Rate Monitor. I know it’s pathetic but when someone passes me on a hill during a recovery day, I find it almost impossible to keep to a slower pace and let him pass. Today I was a little more mature than usual and let him go on by with a simple “Bonjour.” Total distance 295.7 km Total Ascent: 4,163 metres Total Calories: 11,215 will-davies.com

GPS photo of yesterday’s ride. The color of the track indicates altitude changes. You can see that it’s quite flat (red) beside the lake, and it’s pretty clear where the climb starts. Image produced using my Etrex Vista C GPS along with www.GPSvisualizer.com

– Lake Annecy below 53.0 km. Biked my first col (mountain pass) this year – the short but steep Col de la Forclaz (Haute Savoie, France). It is only about 9 km of climb but averages about a 9% grade with one full kilometer a leg crushing 11.5% grade. Below, I watched the 2004 Tour up this climb. The last time I climbed this Col was July 2004 the day of the Tour de France. The climb was swampeed with people, caravans, cars, etc. It was the second last climb on the day that Armstrong came from nowhere to beat…

It’s late December 2005. I am getting my bike gear on. I am going out for a quick thousand km ride to try and meet my 10,000km goal. Cold sweats! I better get out there now. 61.1 km. Beautifuly sunny day, cool and crisp – even better than yesterday. 4 Celsius. For a Tuesday, there were lots of cyclists out. On a big hill accelerated to catch a guy a little bit ahead. Blew past him only to discover he was about 60. Pretty fit. Total distance 206.5 km Total Ascent: 2,289 metres Total Calories: 7,560 will-davies.com
