Happiest while cycling uphill.
A wonderful, steep, quiet, well paved roads that is literally car-free (we saw one descending).
Quiet, challenging, scenic, with a beautiful summit. And in summer, a great Alpine chalet restaurant just below La Dôle makes this a favourite cycling climb.
I like cows. And I pass a lot while cycling. The Ventoux of the Jura Mountains?
Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne is the start town for one of the greatest climbs in cycling: Col du Galbier via Col du Télégraphe. At the exact traffic light where the Télégraphe starts – in 180° opposite direction – starts Col de Beau Plan. This is yet another very good Maurienne valley climb that is almost completely ignored due to the embarrassment of fantastic choices here. The road heads up immediately. The village was high atop huge, clearly unclimbable, cliffs with big mountains on each side. I am an annoying person with whom to drive through the Alps. I keep pointing up at mountains and talking about possible bike routes. And the summit of Col du Frêne can be seen from the highway far below on the way to bigger climbs so I am always yammering on about it. But I hadn’t climbed it in years until now. A challenging, little known climb, on quiet roads. Sandwiched between Col du Galibier and Col de la Croix de Fer. In summer, bring a mountain bike and go even higher.
Doreen and I drove to Torino (Turin) last weekend. Lots of fun, nice museums, gelato stores everywhere. But the visit was a success in large part due to the bike share program that allowed us to cycle everywhere. The city is covered with little stations of 10 bikes or so and with the card thingy one can drop off or pick up a bike at any of these spots. €13 euros for 48 hours. Both days we rode along the Po river along large paths used by joggers and bikers. Beautiful and we never got far enough to know if/when…
