A very cool feature of the Tour de l’Ain is that for three of the stages they run same-day amateur cyclosportives on the exact same route as the pros.
Today I saw more waterfalls, glaciers, hairpins, and tunnels than I have ever seen in a single day.
A beautiful loop through the Haut Juras – finishing with a superb climb through and above the Gorges du Flumens.
My St-Etienne friends Philippe and Xavier were in the neighbourhood and invited me to join them on a superb but challenging loop. Every climb was steep – including the famous Col de Joux Plane.
French Magazine Le Cycle currently has a special edition out, listing what it calls the 50 most beautiful routes in France. Eric and I decided to try one of their more mountainous suggestions.

With five climbs and some of the steepest stretches in the entire Tour, this stage (along with Ventoux) will be the toughest test of the race.
