At the base of Col de la Colombière, the quaint Savoie village of Le Grand Bornand will host a Tour de France stage for the 5th time in 2009 – the huge mountain stage 17.
The climb to Col des Gliéres is one of a very few big climbs that I think is actually better (more fun!) in the winter.
I love having a mountain in my backyard.
I am trying to get myself motivated for climbing in the cold. Actually, the climbing is fun. It’s the descents that can be awful.
Unfortunately the snow was very soft up high and almost impossible to ride on.
So I ended up pushing for several kilometres. Nice hike though. 🙂

OK cycling season in the high (and medium) Alps is winding down for 2007. I awoke this morning to snow in Zermatt, the beautiful car-free swiss ski village below the Matterhorn – and had a terrible time renting a bike.
