Barry – on left – has spent much of his life in the South Pacific and Australia. He started complaining about the cold here, back when I was still wearing shorts!
I started to run into snow and ice on long stretches shaded from the sun. My tires were slipping and I considered turning around – but I promised myself I would descend the crazy parts by foot.
At about 1,250 meters (4200 feet) the paved road ended and I ran into snow. I wasn’t sure where the actual Col was and I hate to climb a Col and not find the sign at the top
So I decided to continue climbing the gravel path through the snow.
This is another beautiful deserted road built it seems just for cyclists. It’s extremely steep with a 5 km stretch averaging 10.5% and one full kilometre averaging 12%.
But it’s a pleasure winding up through the quiet woods with periodic views of the Alps in the distance.
