At the risk of repeating myself, the Jura mountains are an incredible place for steep, big, beautiful, deserted cycling climbs.

Back in May, we hiked up to Chalet des Auges above Col des Glières. We were astonished to see a mountain biker there. Upon interrogation we discovered that there is a terrible quality, old road up the back way, starting in Entremont.

Every time I have cycled Galibier, I have eyed a nearby old military road full of hairpins.
I had no idea of the plan, but I knew that we wouldn’t be doing something as standard as climbing Alpe d’Huez.
It’s becoming the summer of beautiful Alpine Lake / Dam rides. But this time I went another 14 kilometres past the dam.
This is one of my very favourite cycling routes. A steep, beautiful climb, surrounded by high mountains.
Perhaps the best ride of the year. Certainly the most beautiful.
At Col des Aravis begins a terrific farm track all the way to Col de l’Arpettaz roughly 15 kms away. This was the highlight of the ride.
